Adorable atmosphere and fantastic food. Garlice bread is the best I've ever had. Loved my salad (with mixed greens) and parmasan dressing. Egg salad sandwich was on really great bread. Sauvignon blanc was a perfect compliment too.


Quaint farm setting, good food, slow service

The service is usually pretty slow over lunch at Jacks because they seem to be at least one or two servers under staffed every time I've visited. The food is pretty good - great sandwich selections on non-standard breads. They're always out of the soup I want though!

Sometimes it takes me a while to catch up with little, out-of-the way places like this charming store and cafe. It began serving lunch in 1999. I made my first visit only recently.

Housed in what once was a stable, Jack's sits amid a cluster of antique and craft shops known as the Homestead. Co-owners Mary Ellen Mee and Jack Cameron opened it as a gourmet food and specialty gift shop, Cameron said. Several customers suggested that they also serve lunch.

The owners added a rear kitchen, set up tables and chairs for 30 (26 more customers can sit outside when the weather's good), and began serving from a simple menu of top-quality breads and other ingredients.

One of the more unusual creations on Jack's menu is a Cobb sandwich that, like the classic salad, combines the flavors of chicken, blue cheese, bacon, tomato and guacamole. Another tasty sandwich features Black Forest ham with white Cheddar and a strong mustard-sage dressing. The Cafe's most popular creation, Cameron said, is the Farm American: turkey, cranberry sauce and dilled mayonnaise on cranberry-oat bread.

There's fresh soup daily and bar cookies for dessert, along with a nice selection of teas.

Jack's Cafe is an idyllic little cafe tucked back away from the main traffic on Bluemound Road. What was once a homestead is now the home of the restaurant, a quilt shop, and a country antique store. The gardens here are a real treat - they provide a beautiful backdrop when dining outside.

The menu here is a bit limited, but both my wife and I were able to find several items that piqued our interest. We started with an order of Killer Bread, which was quite good. I had ordered the Baked Ham sandwich and my wife ordered the Chicken Salad sandwich on cranberry bread.

My wife said that her meal was very good; she enjoyed the artisan bread and the fact that the sandwich was not overly mayo-ed, which can be a common problem at a lot of sandwich shops. I thought the baked ham was outstanding and I really enjoyed the sage-mustard-mayo combination.

When we went, there was one person working as wait staff, but we didn't notice too much slowness - she was busy, but she was over to check on us quickly enough, and always quite polite.

Overall, we'll definitely be adding this to our often-frequent list. With the great food and charm of the place, it was a real treat.

30 Second Intro: Upon driving up to the restaurant, it was as if you were driving to a little farmhouse in Provence. The grounds were beautifully decorated with flowers, and the restaurant had a cute patio for outside seating. Upon entering, you find yourself in a small room made of stone walls, with several tables and a bar. The menu consists of salads and sandwiches, all of which sound so good that deciding on your meal is rather difficult!

The Food: We tried some of the Killer Bread that others considered wonderful and it was, indeed, to die for. I had a cup of the soup-of-the-day and a turkey/cranberry sandwich. Both of which were Fabulous, and the dill/sage mayo that they put on the sandwich complemented the turkey and cranberry well. My colleague tried the deluxe egg salad sandwhich and she absolutely loved it.

In summary: GREAT place to go for a sandwich and to get away from it all, if only for an hour. We will sneak back as often as we can this week!

We stopped in at the end of lunch time, around two, for sandwiches, soups, and salads. Everything was lovely, but we got really excited about the pumpkin cake dessert. The waitress sweetly assured us that she'd be there anyway, and it would be fine if we stayed to have some, even though they'd already technically been closed for fifteen minutes. And it was delicious!
